After the pair of armchairs with curved wooden arms was stripped, the springs, padding and full upholstery were renewed. The completed pieces received blue and off-white covers.

How comfort became a workshop

The pleasure of making something tangible

My name is Zoltán Jónás. I originally took up upholstery to make truly comfortable furniture for myself. Along the way, however, I realised that even the finest upholstery cannot save a piece if its wooden frame, joinery and underlying structure are not properly understood.

I learned a wealth of traditional techniques and practical skills from master upholsterer Gábor Fogarasi. His professional standing is reflected in the work entrusted to him, including the restoration of a seating suite once owned by Louis XIV: two sofas and four armchairs. András Kiss, a cabinetmaker and furniture restorer, guided me through woodworking, structural construction, French polishing and restoration; among his notable projects is the restoration of a clock case in the Hungarian Parliament Building.

Not every piece I planned for myself has been finished even now. It turned out that almost everyone I know has at least one favourite item of furniture that eventually prompts the question:

“Do you think you could fix it?”“Of course. Bring it over.”

That same curiosity still drives every piece of furniture I rebuild, reupholster or restore.
